Definition

The competence of perseverance refers to the ability to sustain goal-directed action and energy when confronting difficulties and obstacles impede goal achievement (Morris, Webb, Fu, & Singhal, 2013).

This competence can be assessed against the following three students’ mastery levels:

Introductory level

Abandons an assignment when tired or under distraction; abandons a task when experiencing failure; does not work with clear goals.

Intermediate level

Risks to abandon an assignment when tired or under distraction; risks to abandon a task when experiencing failure; does not always work with clear goals.

Advanced level

Finishes an assignment even if tired of; keeps on working in a concentrated way even if there is a distraction; continues with the task even after a setback or failure; works with clear goals.
